When deciding on the genre I wanted to do, I took into consideration the mise-en-scene necessary to establish the genre and the people who would let me feature them in my video. I based most of my decisions on these factors and was able to rule out Heavy Metal or Rock as it is mainly performance over narrative and that would mean including instruments like a drum kit and electric guitars that I did not have. I was also able to rule out Hip Hop or R&B as I didn't have any one who looked the part to play that sort of artist convincingly.

From this I did some research and tried to focus on songs that I already know to inspire me. From this I focused on one of my favourite aritsts; the folk rock duo 'The Pierces' as I am very familiar with their music and could develop a strong narrative from their songs as they like to tell a story with their lyrics.

After research into their music I was inspired by their music videos and developed the idea to incorporate a witch or a magic based mise-en-scene that focused on the essence of controlling another human and see the narrative play through,

I knew I wanted the song to be by The Pierces so I listened to them and watched videos that already exsisted and came up with some songs I would consider that linked to the narrative I had already focused on.

SONG CHOICE DEVELOPMENT

Blood

Drag You Down

Elements

Piece Of You

This song was considered as it has a creepy vibe to it as the singing is quite eery and would go with the witchy elements I wanted to incorporate. However the song wasn't interesting to listen to so I don't think it would hook in the audience.

This song has a potential for a strong narrative in the video as the lyrics are quite dark "that can take you to your grave". A problem I had was it was too upbeat and didn't go with the idea I wanted to explore; having the protagonist mouning a lost relationship.

Elements has a good beat and uses symbols as one of it's main instruments so is more unique sounding. However the lyrics were hard to work with to form a strong narrative because they were harder to understand the true meaning.

This song worked with the eery feel and seemed to hold a strong narrative from the lyrics but I didn't like the chorus as much as the verses.

This was the song I went with in the end as it has a strong reference to witchcraft in the way the artist is singing, creating a creepy, eery feel. The beat in the background builds up and makes it easier to incorporate dancing and also works to keep the audience interested.

Monsters

Monsters also incorporates the eery element I was looking for and there is a strong drum in the background which keeps it interesting.
